Day 5 - NUS and Ngee Ann Poly

Today, we visited 2 design universities. The first one was at NUS and looked at the design aspects there that were based around industrial design and design centred around physical design. We had to catch a bus there and it was really hot DX but the campus had a McDonalds LOL! Some of the hang-out areas were nice too.

What I liked there was the fact that they had these awesome machines for 3D printing, Laser cutting/engraving and a paint area but I also liked some of the interesting concrete 'towers' around the gardens on the outside and inside of the campus and they had some nice industrial geometric shape designs.
During lunch break, I went with a small group of the class and explored the library area of the campus, only to find it on the 5th floor of a building and that we couldn't actually get in to have a look either =="

These were pretty cool 3D printed items

Though, on the first floor was the uni shopfront, were uni supplies, graduation robes and etc were sold. I went ahead and explored the place first only because I was eager to escape the heat but there were alot of NUS branded things.

At the front of the uni, there were some really cool displays of chairs made of wood, all lined up or positioned in particular positions along the steps, which, along with the concrete 'towers', gave a strong impression of what NUS specialised in, in terms of area of design. Pity we couldn't sit on them :P

Afterwards, we caught a bus to Ngee Ann Poly university.
The campus was beautiful but huge! It even had beautiful courtyards and an awesome dining hall.
It took us an extra 10 minutes to walk towards the otherside of the campus where the design section was located.

We were lead or shown around by an ex-student or graduated student of UC in Industrial Design, who was now working as a tutor at the uni. He also had connections to one of the classmates. Along the way, we passed or were show different industrial or physical design aspects of the uni and some of the work or project that were on display such as planes and auto mobiles.

When we got to our destination, it was in a industrial design class and for the afternoon, we worked with the students (we were all split into groups and mixed up with the students there) to create packaging to protect an egg from breaking when dropped.

The goal was to create protective packaging with minimum amount of materials (we were only given straws, paper and...that's it i think ==") that would prevent an egg from breaking. We were also given 2 eggs, one was a tester and the second one was the one we would be using to demonstrate how our packaging worked.
Both were also raw eggs heh heh~~

This really reminded me of sem 2 of my first year at uni, only that we had boiled eggs and alot of access to materials XD

Unfortunately, our one died on the first drop and we had spent all the time we had been given constructing our egg 'contraption' :(
